Tape Baking & Digitising

What is Tape Baking?

Back in the 1970's a lot of tape manufacturers made changes to the chemistry they used to formulate the tape binder to stick the magnetic particles to the plastic base of the tape. Unbeknown to them, this new chemistry attracted moisture, which over time would make the tape attract water and become sticky.

Recording engineers started to find that either they could not play the tapes or the tape would start to leave a gummy residue on the play heads or, in extreme cases, the tape would snap, losing the audio forever!

How can Sticky Tape Syndrome be reversed?

The good news is Quantegy, formerly known as Ampex, began research into sticky tape syndrome and came up with a temporary solution that reverses the problem for approximately a month; Tape Baking. This involves baking the tape at a very low and precise temperature for a long period of time.

How Can We Help?

We offer an end-to-end service when it comes to baking due to the time limit of play-back after this process has taken place. We pride ourselves on getting the tape(s) back to you quickly.

For your peace of mind, only our trained staff are used for courier services.
